Dragoon Stagecoach Services
Certainly the Butterfield Overland Trail put Dragoon and its spring on the map. But Dragoon at one point was also served by daily stagecoach services to Tombstone and Johnsonville and periodic service to Benson.
There was even a Dragoon Johnsonville Stagecoach company that reportedly ran daily trips to and from Dragoon and Johnsonville.
April of 1880, Ed Swift of Tombstone put in a stage line to Dragoon. His stage left Tombstone at seven o'clock in the morning and arrived in Dragoon at nine, two hours later. It returned that evening by 7 in the evening at Tombstone. A Tombstone freighter named Alex Jordan erected a saloon and restaurant in Dragoon. "It was said he set as good a meal as could be found anywhere." Cassius Hooker supplied Dragoon with meat and vegetables. He also ran a hack line between Dragoon and Russellville for a fare of one dollar (about $30 today). Cassius was also Dragoon's first Post Master.
There was also the Jackass Mail Service that ran through Dragoon as well. It was properly known as the San Antonio–San Diego Mail Line.
The stagecoach pictured here was the Sandy Bob Crouch stagecoach whose primary route was Tombstone to Bisbee but at one point made trips a couple days a week from Tombstone to Benson and occasionally to Dragoon. It was reportedly a "Modoc" brand stagecoach. This is an original stagecoach that ran in this area.
